I was hoping there was a secret, but no: "To prevent primary cough headaches, avoid coughing."
Does anyone NOT avoid coughing? |

I attempted to go to the library this morning. They didn't open until noon. It was snowing.
So I went to get my oil changed and my state inspection renewed. The Greek guys at Kwik Kar gave me a little cognac in a foam coffee cup so I could 'get warm'. Apparently Greek people feel the same way about snow as Texas people!
After that it still wasn't noon, so I went to Walmart to try to get some earmuffs for Jessica. She really wants earmuffs. But they don't carry earmuffs. No chance of getting Jessica out of the house today.
Then I went to the post office to pick up my package. I ordered a bunch of stocking stuffers from Amazon. About 15 people were in line there, all of them wearing mismatched winter clothing. Nobody here owns a winter coat.
It was finally noon, so I went back to the library. They'd put up a sign that said "CLOSED DUE TO WEATHER".
Now I have nothing to read, and everything is closed. It's snowed about a half inch. |

| Writer's Block: Reminiscing about the Internet |
[Dec. 3rd, 2009|08:57 pm] |
I remember the first time I ever used the internet. My mum and I were helping one of her friends move, and her friend had internet access. It had the dial-up modem that makes the sound (eeee-brrrr-eeee-beep-beep-beep...), used a mosaic browser, and it took about 10 minutes for each page to load. I thought it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen.
Now I use the internet for EVERYTHING. Amazing, huh? |

I had a nightmare that Dr. Bean from the chem department sat down next to me in biochem class, looked at me very seriously, and said, "you need to drop this class, because you're definitely going to fail".
Then I woke up sweating and horrified. Everyone I've told so far thinks it's hilarious, but I'm still a little traumatized. |

| Writer's Block: Book worms unite! |
[Nov. 28th, 2009|10:18 am] |
I read a random selection of 3 to 5 books every week, so I get a lot of duds but quite a few pleasant surprises.
3 good: Jennifer Government, by Maxx Barry The Iron Bridge, by David Morse The Teahouse Fire, by Avery Ellis
3 awful: Pattern Recognition, by William Gibson The Folded World, by Amity Gaige anything by VC Andrews
I don't have any explanations; these are just a few things I've picked up recently. |

| Writer's Block: Let the shopping begin! |
[Nov. 27th, 2009|05:42 pm] |
I bought a lot of my it while I was on my trip, and the rest I've ordered online. I'm done. Normally I wait a little longer, but this year I didn't want to be bothered during finals week and while my mum is visiting. I haven't wrapped yet, though. |

I went shopping today at the new thrift store on Bellaire, across from Sharpstown Mall. Yes, I know, stay out of that neighborhood, going to get shot, blah blah blah...I used to live over there. It's NOT that bad.
I got: a green and black plaid flannel shirt, a black long-sleeved tshirt, striped mittens, and a pair of jeans. I'm a size 1 now. I want my gallbladder back...
Tomorrow I have to start studying for finals. Ugh. |

Leaving in 3 days, counting today.
I had everything staged to pack in one carry-on suitcase, then my MIL came over with a big Macy's bag of CANDY. She claims that her family loves chocolate, and that I have to take a huge bag for each of them. So I now have to:
1. check a full-size suitcase 2. risk having my luggage lost 3. try to explain the presence 10 lb. of candy to customs officials in Vietnamese 4. look like a fat American that lives on peanutbutter bonbons
Why me?
And Jessica says that her aunt told her they don't even really like the candy. |

| Writer's Block: Proven by Science |
[Aug. 12th, 2009|08:38 am] |
Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.
Science simply means knowledge that is obtained through experimentation and study. Remember the "scientific method" you learned in 5th grade? Even magic, the supernatural, or a 'higher power' would ultimately have a scientific explanation --- it might just be one so advanced and complex that humans would never figure it out. |

| Writer's Block: Lights Out |
[Jul. 12th, 2009|09:40 am] |
Last fall we had our first major hurricane since moving here, and the power was out for quite a while. The first night I kind of liked it; I studied by candlelight like Abraham Lincoln (though I don't think he ever took organic chemistry!) and when I went out for a walk it was nice and dark in the neighborhood, and you could see all the stars. The next day everybody else on our block went out and got a generator, and that night the noise and fumes were awful, especially since we had to open all the windows and sleep in front of them because of the heat. By the time I'd been taking cold showers and cooking ramen over an open flame for a week, I was heartily sick of the whole thing! |

I hate the trend of replacing books and study space in the library with computers dedicated to public internet access. They take up as much as half of the building in some of the local libraries, and the people waiting in line to use them take up most of the rest of it. There's nowhere to sit down and read or study; for the 10% of patrons who are actually there for the books, the library has become just another place to get in and out of as quickly as possible. Like Walmart, it's crowded and noisy and there's nowhere to park.
I realize that some people have a legitimate need for free internet access, but there's got to be a better way to do this. I shouldn't have to give up my enjoyment of the library so some homeless guy can get on myspace. |

[Jul. 8th, 2009|09:08 am] |
I don't really ever expect a change in the types of clothing we wear (shirts, pants, and the like) but I wouldn't be surprised if advanced fabrics become the next big thing, especially if there are constraints on agriculture due to climate change, food shortages, or fuel supply problems by then. |

Last night at about 11 we were waiting in traffic on 61st and this drunk guy stumbled out in the street and fell over in front of my car. When I got out to see if he was ok, he got up and stumbled off again, then wandered into the Little Caesar's parking lot and fell over again! There were some people standing in the parking lot over there, so I didn't give up my space in traffic to see what would happen next.
So much for natural selection. |

Since HEB removed their recycling bins, there are only TWO places in the entire city of Houston when you can drop off plastics. TWO! The nearest one is about 15 miles away, and not in a direction that I ever go, so I'm going to have to make a special trip later. It's just stupid. |

[Jul. 1st, 2009|08:11 am] |
I had a strange dream, really strange. There was a big ship, but it was also an aquarium store and everywhere I went there were tons of aquariums full of fish. Then the ship started pitching around a lot, and the water was sloshing out of the aquariums, but nobody else seemed concerned about it. Then I woke up thinking that I had a chemistry final today and that I needed to be cramming.
A girl at my old job said that when you dream about fish, it means you're pregnant. That's obviously not the case, so I guess it doesn't mean anything at all, other than perhaps that I ate too many cookies before bed and I have to go to Petco today. I have to go to the financial aid office today to find out where my summer Stafford loans are. I hate going over there, because the line is always long and the solutions are complicated. I was looking forward to being lazy all day. |

So for the past month I've been trying to compile a list of books that I frequently recommend, and it's slow going simply because I've read so many books over my lifetime. I went through several per day as a child (I was sick a lot and didn't have many friends), and still go through several per week. It's hard to narrow it down to a few favorites.
So my question is, what books do you frequently recommend? |

| Writer's Block: Green Living |
[Jun. 28th, 2009|11:05 am] |
My school is light green: there are a lot of recycling bins, but I don't think students use them religiously. I always do. My home is very green, because I have control over that. My mate's office (since I don't have my own yet) is completely un-green. They leave 300+ computers on overnight, refuse to put in recycling bins, and crank up the a/c so high that you have to wear a sweater all summer long. |
